to shield or not to shield: saving our tanks

Whee, second post. Now let's hope we get some more members. :Dv

FOR I HAVE A QUESTION! ♥

[ x-posted ]

If you spec into discipline, it's common knowledge that healing instances is the most efficient way to level. When my boyfriend took me on my first run through Wailing Caverns, I was confident I'd been doing a pretty good job, considering I was still pretty much a newbie. We wiped a lot, sure, but if the healer dies first, it's generally the tank's fault, right? It wasn't until half-way through the instance when our pally tank complained about being bubbled that my boyfriend turned to me and said, "Oh, babe, I forgot to tell you. You're not supposed to shield the tank."

And I have lived by that rule ever since.

But now I'm confused.

A few days ago, I came across this article, claiming priests should "shield your tank whenever possible," and reading through the comments, I can't recall finding a single protest to this piece of advice.

As a level 38 discipline priest, it's not really my place to say whether the article is right or wrong. This is why I come to you. And I question:

Is "shielding your tank whenever possible" a good idea? And if not, why?
